Telogen effluvium, a temporary loss of hair, is common following a major weight reduction. It often begins 3 months to 4 months after losing weight and can persist up to a year.

The abrupt stress on the body, which is unavoidable when dieting, is the major reason for this transitory hair loss, according to experts.

The American Academy of Dermatology notes that while hair loss is permanent since it results in a decrease in hair density, normal hair shedding often lasts only a few months. Hair loss and new hair growth both cease once the source of stress has passed.

Losing weight, giving birth, having a high fever, having surgery, etc. are just few of the many reasons why people lose their hair. As soon as the body learns to cope with the stress, the hair loss ceases.
